“Spiritual care is an invitation to see the world and be with people in a way that is sensitive to their inner experience” (Spiritual Heath Association 2021).
“Spirituality is a way of paying particular attention to the world and everything within it, which is crucial for the effective delivery of genuinely holistic and person-centered care” (John Swinton).

What is Spirituality?

“Spirituality is a dynamic and intrinsic aspect of humanity through which a person seeks ultimate meaning, purpose and transcendence, and experiences relationship to self, family, others, community, society, nature, and the significant or sacred” (Puchalski 2014, 646).

Spirituality is a common human phenomenon that is encountered in a variety of ways, and in all human beings (Swinton 2001).

Spirituality is a highly significant, meaningful, and consequential theme, which is different to religious tradition and practice (Peteet 2017).

Spirituality relates to the meaning of life, connectedness to humanity, relationships, and harmony with the universe (Penman, Oliver and Harrington 2009).

Spirituality is our inner journey’s search for meaning, enabled through our relationships. These relationships can be with each other, with nature, with ourselves and sometimes with God, the Sacred, or the transcendent (Harriet Mowat).

At My Soul Matters:

- We value the importance of spiritual health, and we pay attention to the spiritual issues that may arise in illness, suffering, life and death.

- We are person-centered, we create an environment of compassion, and we make no assumptions about a person’s convictions, life orientation, or spiritual identity.

- We seek to offer a safe space where a person can share their story and narrate their experience, in order for the person to discover and uncover their own meaning (Cook 2016; Cook 2020).
